The Health Effects of Physical Inactivity and How to Change

In today’s world, many of us spend a lot of time sitting—whether it’s at work, at home watching TV, or on our phones. This might not seem like a big deal, but sitting too much can actually be really bad for our health in the long run.

What Happens When We Sit Too Much?

Sitting too much can lead to a bunch of health problems. It can make us gain weight, get diabetes, and have heart problems. It can also make us feel sad or worried. A recent article by Pacific Medical Training tells us that sitting around too much could be as harmful as smoking a lot of cigarettes every day!

How Can We Move More?

At Persistence Athletics, we know it’s important to move around throughout the day. Here are some easy ways to make sure you’re not sitting too much:

  • Set Reminders to Move: Use your phone or a timer to remind you to stand up and walk around every hour. Just a few minutes can make a big difference.
  • Try a Standing Desk: If you can, try using a desk that lets you stand while you work. This helps you move more even while you’re working.
  • Join a Fitness Class: Being part of a regular exercise class helps keep you active. You can try different things like yoga, lifting weights, or going for a run.
  • Walk While You Talk: If you have a meeting that doesn’t need you to be at a computer, try walking while you talk. It’s a great way to get in some steps!

Why Is Moving Important?

Moving around a lot is good for more than just keeping your weight down. It helps your mind stay sharp, gives you more energy, and keeps your body feeling good. Staying active can also help you fight off sickness better.

For anyone who wants to learn more about why sitting too much is bad and what you can do about it, check out the article, “Physical Inactivity: Health Risks, Effects & Benefits” by Pacific Medical Training. It has a lot of good information on how to stay healthy by moving more.
