    Group class FAQs

What is a group class at Persistence Athletics like?

Every class is coached and follows the same structure: a coach-led warm-up, a strength or skill block, the workout of the day (the WOD), and a cool-down. You walk in, the day's workout is on the whiteboard with scaling tracks, and the coach walks the room to set you up. The WOD pulls from CrossFit's full toolbox - weightlifting, gymnastics, and monostructural cardio like rowing, ski, bike, and run. We run roughly a 1-to-12 coach-to-athlete ratio so a coach is watching your form, not barking reps from across the room.

Do I need experience to join a group class?

No experience required. The whole point of a coached gym is that workouts scale to your starting point. Most members start with zero gym background. Your first class is free, coached, and already scaled to wherever you are starting. We have members who could not do a single push-up on day one and are doing strict pull-ups months later.

How does scaling work if I cannot do a movement?

Every movement scales. Pull-ups become ring rows. Push-ups go to your knees or to a box. The coach prepares a scaled version of the workout for you before you arrive and sets the weight and reps so it challenges you without breaking you. Beginners and competitive athletes train in the same room, doing the same workout scaled differently and finishing in the same window. Tell the coach about any knee, back, or shoulder history before class - nothing disqualifies you, it just informs the scaling.

What does a typical training week look like?

We program coached CrossFit, strength, and conditioning six days a week, with a different focus each day - heavy strength and short metcons, gymnastics and Olympic-lifting skill work, longer aerobic conditioning, and mixed strength days. Saturday is a dedicated HYROX class from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, included in every membership. Members typically train 3 to 5 days a week. Sunday is a rest day.

Is my first class really free?

Yes. Your first class is free and coached, with every movement scaled to your starting point. The coach already knows it is your first day because we flag it on the roster before you arrive. Arrive about 15 minutes early so we can give you a quick tour and meet you before class starts. After class, the coach spends a few minutes with you at the front desk to talk through the right next step - no pressure, no contracts on our weekly plans.

What should I bring and wear to a class?

Athletic clothes you can squat and lift in, a water bottle, and a small towel. The one wardrobe choice that matters is your shoes - flat-soled training shoes like Nike Metcon, Reebok Nano, or NoBull work best, since running shoes wobble under load. If running shoes are all you have, bring them and we will scale around them. We provide all the equipment: barbells, dumbbells, plates, kettlebells, rowers, and jump ropes.
